FAQs
What does it cost?
Each Silva Cell installation is unique to existing site requirements, and costs will vary by project depending on depth and quantity. However, the cost of soil volume per cubic feet is considerably less expensive than any other system or planting hole. Please contact us for a quote specific to your site and project needs.

Do I need to use a root barrier in combination with the Silva Cell?
Yes, the use of a directing root barrier with the Silva Cell is recommended. The root barrier guides the roots into the uncompacted soil of the Silva Cell system, preventing lifting and damage of the adjacent paving.

How is the Silva Cell different from Structural Soil?
92% of the Silva Cell frame can be filled with soil, providing a highly efficient soil volume for root growth and significant stormwater treatment. By comparison, most structural soil mixes are just 20% soil, meaning a much greater area must be used to achieve the equivalent amount of soil volume.

Can the Silva Cell help me qualify for LEED points?
Yes, in several categories. Please contact us to find out more.

How much water can the Silva Cell Tree and Stormwater System process?
The amount of stormwater the Silva Cell system can treat depends on the type and quantity of soil used, the type of tree planted, and your stormwater treatment needs. Please complete our stormwater checklist and we can develop a specific, quantifiable plan for your site.

Can the Silva Cell be used on existing trees, or only on new plantings?
At present the Silva Cell system can only be used on new plantings, but we’re in the process of developing protocols for retrofit applications.

When installing the Silva Cell, must specific soil be used?
No, the native soil can definitely be used. However, depending on the quality and the specific needs of your site, you may want to use one of our specified soil mixes to optimize root growth, stormwater management, or a combination of the two.

What is the Silva Cell made of?
Made of an ultra high-strength compound of glass and polypropylene, the Silva Cell is a modular building block of a complete system, from paving surface to sub-base aggregate, that distributes vehicle loads while promoting ecological functions.

What kinds of paving does the Silva Cell support?
Our current standard installation details support concrete, pavers, and asphalt – other paving surfaces should be reviewed by our technical team prior to proceeding. Depending on your loading requirements, specifications may vary. Please contact us for more details.
