James Urban, FASLA
Urban Trees + Soils

James Urban specializes in the design of trees and soils in urban spaces. He has written and lectured extensively on the subject of urban tree planting and has been responsible for the introduction of many innovations, including most of the current standards relating to urban tree plantings. He was instrumental in the development of structural cells and structural planting soils for use under sidewalk pavements, micro-root paths, and macro soil trench techniques. He was also instrumental in the development of Silva Cells.

James Urban is credited with helping to re-awaken the profession of landscape architecture to the skills required to successfully plant trees in difficult urban soils, and was awarded the 2008 ASLA National Medal of Excellence for his contributions to the profession. He is the author of Up By Roots: Healthy Soils and Trees in the Built Environment.

Peter MacDonagh, FASLA, RLA, ISA
Kestrel Design Group

Peter MacDonagh is the Director of Design + Science at The Kestrel Design Group.  A native of Ireland, Peter was trained in Horticulture at the National Botanic Garden in Dublin and is a Landscape Architecture Graduate of the University of Minnesota. In addition to being a registered landscape architect and horticulturist, MacDonagh has been a certified arborist since 1992. Peter is a recognized authority on sustainable landscape architecture, soil bio-engineering, urban stormwater, green roofs, and urban trees. MacDonagh authored the site and water management portions of the State of Minnesota's Sustainable Building Guidelines (B3) and the Minnesota Department of Transportation Native Seed Mix Design for Roadsides Manual, 2009, and is currently authoring Bioinfiltration, Urban Trees and Green Roofs for the Minnesota Stormwater Manual. In 2002 he completed the ASLA award-winning Minnesota Soil Bioengineering Handbook for the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Peter is a frequent conference speaker and an adjunct professor of landscape architecture at the University of Minnesota, where for the past 13 years he has taught courses in sustainable design.
